Okehampton Carnival 2024
It felt like the entire population of Okehampton plus the surrounding villages had gathered in the centre of Okehampton on Saturday night to watch the annual carnival. Fortunately the weather had been dry for virtually of the day and in fact it felt really mild for the time of year. The walking and driven floats gathered for the spectacle in Mill Road and by the entrance to Simmons Park.
Proceedings started at just after 7pm. While the crowds were waiting the local radio station and their DJ were entaining the cowds in front of the Council Offices.
The procession was led by the Fire Group and the walking groups came immediately afterwards. We took as many photographs both before and during the carnival and about 30 of these are displayed in the gallery.
After the walking floats came the motorised floats which featured groups of kids and then the groups of Young Farmers also thoroughly enjoying themselves.
The procession took about 20 minutes to pass my vantage point. By 7:30pm it was all over but that did not deter the crowd. With the weather being mild and dry, it was an opportunity for everyone to enjoy themselves and of course the pubs were full and doing excellent business. Equally our take away venues were doing a roaring trade as well.
